It was a Saturday afternoon and Smino called to a shop in Chicago where he spent most of his time. After a quick greeting, the 26-year-old rapper, Christopher Smith Jr., began chatting with the cashier and could hear a low voice. He seemed distracted. However, just at the beginning of the conversation, and thus ended the conversation, he happily in saint Louis, Missouri is described in his childhood, and the focus of intense and sharp and dance about the Midwest. With equal passion he sang the year’s most popular debut album “Blkswn”, won the praise of his, not only is one of the most promising new album from the Midwest, and is a real hip hop musician.
Smino proudly claims that he was born and raised (because he had been gracious for most of the show) and was the youngest to live in the four sisters, the music family. “I grew up in a church house every Sunday. He’s always playing a bunch of music, “he explained. “Every time I do something that shows my interest in music, all of these people push me to do this.” Fast forward to Chicago, a breakthrough single is known as “one of the coolest love song”, this year Smino will complete as T – 75 performances – some of the Pain, another as the opening of SZA – this Saturday and Kribmas 2017. Now in the second year, the concert to see Smino del mar hall at the home of his vacation dear.
With so many accolades, it’s still a brutal year, and the rise of Smino is probably the most influential of his relentless mission to be the uplifting voice of black culture. “I realize that the number one thing that blacks in this country have is the same type of struggle,” he said. “With this happening in the United States, you have to find your own thing and make peace around your circle. Stick with it and run with that shit. There’s nothing we can do but be our own community. “This is what he tried to do from the moment he started writing music three years ago and uploading it to SoundCloud.
In his 2016 EP Blkjuptr, Smino broke the struggle for black americans, particularly the sense of being an outsider, to feel that he belongs to another planet. He said: “hands up, they still shoot, take pictures of GuGe,” he attacked “oxygen,” interrupting him at the right moment, stressing his frustration. There’s no question that this song is an internal response to all the innocent black lives of the past few years, but there was a tragedy in 2014 that strongly influenced his life.
“When I was in st. Louis that morning, mike brown was killed,” he said. Smino had just performed the night before and woke up hoping to celebrate with his friends. “Instead, you see Michael brown lying in a place you can walk up and down. They held a candle to him. We’re all out, we’re all in town, we’re all on the street. They had just picked up his body, and the street was stained. It’s so much, blood… I’ve never seen one before. ”
Smino also recalled seeing the first brick of the ferguson police officer at the time, saying that they were saying “a lot of confusion and a lot of unorganized rage”. Ultimately, it sees everyone’s vulnerability, confusion and pain around him, causing him to question his own voice. “I think this kind of energy makes me think about the impact I have on my guy,” he said. “If I can’t help my people out, is it really worth it?”

In Blkswn, he sounded more confident. There, he felt like an outsider, Blkjuptr, who had grown comfortable with an outsider living on his own terms. “I’m sorry, I can’t let you lost me/I live in the bible, the bible the possibility of/I beat like a drum line/and I’m not a spur of the moment, I am not a Russian, m a Blkswn”, he confidently rap album title song. He still call him see their injustice – just like the diversity of the Academy Awards last problem caused # OscarsSoWhite, he referred to in the “Blkoscars” the question, but he is also doing so, he knows he doesn’t have to write any topics. As he said, his only obligation was to be his “most precious self”.
The feeling also applies to his style, and Smino admits that it has striding forward. He said: “I wake up every morning thinking what I should wear. “I am the freshest person in my life right now.” This has to do with his newfound confidence. Because he wanted to see more of it, he kept trying to create a new look, most of which he recorded on Instagram.
Where once he selection criteria of jeans (pain) in some way, sports shoes (usually a Nike air force 1) and T-shirt shirt (often), he is now playing the texture, color and accessories. Neon orange and green camouflage hoodie, mustard crushed velvet jackets, white teddy bear coat, pink sneakers and sunglasses geometry is only part of his closet, but they are only a small part of the mix. The secret, he says, is the details: “the number one way to fly is to step up your shoes and accessories. I got a lot of rags and lots of shoes, and it looks like I have a lot of “fit”.
Because he doesn’t have a stylist, he has never met anyone who understands him or doesn’t want to change him. He’s always looking for new things and new ways to improve his appearance. Recently, he was attracted to Yeezy boots, Off-White x Nike sneakers, Louis Vuitton x Supreme bandanas, Moncler coat and Gucci -print do-rags. He rarely picks up high-end designer work. “I like to wear that flying dog shit,” he said. “I don’t like to wear crazy shit, as for my logo. If it’s Louis vuitton, I’ll pick something that doesn’t have any prints, except rags. “The way Smino sees it, he’s his own brand, he’s wearing too many big names and his actual work is distracting.
That said, he was eager to applaud Rihanna and Kanye for breaking into the fashion world. “They made me hopeful,” he said. “[black] always has a fucking influence. We are fashion reasons. All these designers can make all these clothes, but until we wear them, that thing doesn’t fly. So why don’t we do it ourselves? And you know, that’s what they’re doing. “Like Yeezy, Smino likes how these clothes make people feel confident without being identified. The reason, he says, is that Kanye’s spirit runs through the brand. “He makes you feel like you can be you, because he loves himself very much. It’s like, damn brother, I’ll love me, too, “he said. “People or the media tried to write him down several times, and he came back every time. At a time. I think it’s a true black legend. ”
He tried to bring his wares to zero fatigue, and he started working with producer Monte Booker in 2014, including Ravyn Lenae, Bari and Jay2. Each artist has his own unique voice and desire, and as a group, they bounce back and show each other’s talents. The crew’s merchandise line is still in its infancy, and it currently includes only sweatpants, long-sleeved shirts, hoodies and hats, but the plan is to develop it into a mature collection.
“It’s more of a lifestyle brand. “I want a fucking baby bag and a stroller,” he laughs. “Anything. I must stand up and do it. “The primary goal of zero fatigue is to continue until their creations are completed – not to feel tired until everything is normal. As Smino helps lead the charge, developing it to a higher level is not a problem, but a guarantee.
